The Roaming Giant

High expectations exceeded.

I had set some high expectations before visiting The Roaming Giant in Hamilton East, and I can say that it exceeded my expectations. I was very impressed with all aspects of our dining experience, and would happily visit again.

Upon arriving at the Roaming Giant we noticed how clean and inviting the outside of the building looked which gave us a great first impression. When we walked in we were immediately greeted by a very friendly staff member who steered us in the direction of the bar and made sure we were looked after. Her friendly energy set the tone for our evening, and all staff members we encountered during our evening shared the same energy. They were genuine and friendly, and all very upbeat. I couldn't help but notice how attentive they were to not only our table, but to all tables we could see throughout the restaurant.

We ordered our first round of drinks at the bar, and asked the barman for some recommendations for both beer and wine. He was very quick to help us out. He asked us what kind of wine and beer we usually preferred. He gave us some great recommendations and ended up having a Monteiths Pilsner and a Sanctuary Pinot Noir. As well as serving us our drinks, the Bartender took the time to make conversation, and made us feel valued as customers. After we received our drinks we were taken to our table and had the chance to really take in the building and its atmosphere. I especially loved the way the restaurant was set up and designed. There was plenty of seating, with a wide range of sections to choose between in the restaurant. They have done a great job of creating an industrial feel to the place which I love. One element that I really appreciated about the d├ęcor was the small story printed on the wall to the left of the bar. It tells the story of escaped circus animals in the Claudelands bush and really adds a whole new element to the restaurant. I think it is a really cool way to merge story-telling and history together and a fun way of telling people the story behind the restaurant's name.

After ordering our food we enjoyed some more drinks and within no time our entrees had arrived. We didn't have to wait longer than 20 minutes for our mains and less than 10 min for our dessert. We were really impressed with this, and even more impressed with how prompt our table was cleared.
The meals were presented in a really attractive way, especially my Lamb Shank which was complimented with some yummy root vegetables. The meals definitely represented good value for money, especially the desserts which we really enjoyed.

To end the night we ordered some coffees, which tasted delicious, and paid our bill at the bar. The same barman who served us at the start of the evening helped settle our bill and engaged in more conversation asking us how our evening was, and if everything was okay with our meals. A small gesture like this goes a long way and was a great way to end the evening on a positive note.

Overall we had a great evening at The Roaming Giant. The staff and atmosphere in the restaurant were great and the food was great value for money. The only thing that would make it better would be to add more delicious meals to the menu.

Cheers to the team at The Roaming Giant, you guys made our experience really enjoyable.
