Five Stags Leamington opened in 2012, the first of four in New Zealand and a welcome addition to the Cambridge dining scene.

It was our first visit to this restaurant for my partner & I and we were looking forward to trying out this restaurant based on good feedback we had heard. We arrived early and found that there was plenty of convenient parking right outside the door. Since we had time, we decided to have a drink at the bar before being seated and found a lovely spot in the sun to sit and relax and take in the atmosphere. The restaurant is large and roomy and has been themed to the style of a New Zealand hunting lodge. With old framed photos and five stag heads lining the walls, wood panelling and a pitched roof, its easy to feel at home and comfortable here especially with the big open fireplace.

The bar and wait staff were all attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and enthusiastic in offering us additional drinks and food service during our meal.

The meals were great value for money - generous portions and tasty, we particularly enjoyed the Venison Scaloppini on Polenta ($35) for the main course. The stand-out dishes however were the often overlooked items, which had an attention to detail that set them apart from the norm. The Volare breads starter came with a beautiful homemade artickoke dip and the fries were served English style with salt and vinegar which I had never tried before but was delicious.

We shared a decadent Chocolate Fudge brownie ($14) for desert which hit the spot and we left well fed and happy. This is definitely a place worth visiting, a great option for groups, and with a menu full of so many tempting dishes, we will be back.
