Smith & McKenzie

Smith & McKenzie has been around a while in Hamilton, over 6 years in fact and has won various awards, most notably it was recently awarded best restaurant in New Zealand.

It was no surprise then that the restaurant was already full when we arrived for dinner.

Despite the busyness we were warmly welcomed and enjoyed attentive, prompt service the entire evening. The restaurant or Chophouse as it calls itself, specialises in premium quality, aged steaks but also offers a great selection of alternative dishes for those not wanting a steak.

We ordered drinks on arrival, settled in and had a look over the bar and restaurant menu's which was full of interesting choices. I made a mental note that Smith and McKenzie is a good option for an after-work drinks & snacks venue.

It is difficult to say what the highlight of the evening was. Aside from a slight hiccup with our drinks order disappearing, the entire experience was sharp, polished and professional.

Our meals were all delivered promptly even though the kitchen was loaded with orders, the service was outstanding, the best we have experienced in a long time in this city.

The quality of the meals in both presentation and flavour were much closer to fine dining than a steakhouse. Portions were good value for money, especially the starters which were very generous. The d├ęcor, music and atmosphere were spot on for this type of restaurant and it was nice to be able to see through into the kitchen and watch the chefs at the immaculately clean grill. I have to say we were thoroughly impressed from the start to finish.

Our overall experience is a real credit to Smith & McKenzie. To provide an almost faultless evening across all departments on a busy night is no easy feat. Well done.
